Before Claude Builds Your App, Do This
Nov 02, 2026How to Set Up AI Guardrails in Claude Code for Safer No-Code Builds
AI can build incredibly fast, but most tutorials skip the most critical part: setting up proper guardrails to keep your build on track. While AI is efficient, it can also drift, make things up, and become difficult to monitor when you're building complex systems with multiple moving parts. In this guide, you'll learn exactly how to set up a Claude Code session with all the guardrails you need to monitor progress, make informed decisions, and maintain full control over deploying to your live environment.
Complete Your Project Scoping Before Opening Claude Code
Before you even connect Claude Code to your MCP session, you must have a properly scoped project in place. This is the hard work that can't be skipped—it's your foundation. For this demonstration, the scoping documents were already created in .md format using a regular Claude session and saved to a local folder. These scoping docs give your Claude Code session a clear frame of reference, defining what you're building, who it's for, and what's explicitly out of scope. Without this groundwork, your AI build will have no direction and will inevitably drift off course.
Launch Your Session with a Structured Kickoff Prompt
When starting your new Claude Code session, select your project folder and paste in a carefully crafted kickoff prompt. This prompt should direct Claude to first read your Claude.md file and all other markdown files in the folder, then play back to you in five bullets or fewer what you're building, who it's for, and what's out of scope. Most importantly, the kickoff prompt must confirm the guardrails—specifically that Claude cannot deploy live code without your review first. You also want to request that Claude open a Build Desk, which will organize all questions and decisions throughout the build process, and propose a build plan with ordered milestones mapped to your spec sections.
Restrict Publishing Permissions at the MCP Level
One of the most critical guardrails is preventing Claude from publishing apps without human approval. In this demonstration using the Zeet MCP connector, Claude immediately flagged that it had permission to publish, which violated the stated guardrails. To fix this, navigate to your connectors, select your MCP connector (in this case, Zeet), and update the "publish new apps" permission to "needs approval" or block it entirely. This ensures Claude can do all the building, testing, and reasoning, but you remain in control of the final publication to your live environment.
Use the Build Desk Artifact to Stay Organized
The Build Desk is a game-changing feature that helps you manage decisions throughout your build. Instead of Claude bombarding you with dozens of questions scattered throughout the session, the Build Desk organizes all questions in one interactive artifact. For example, when building an expense tracker, Claude might ask whether older claims should be blocked or flagged—you can record your answer directly in the Build Desk. When you're ready, simply tell Claude to "check the desk," and it will review your answers and either proceed with building or surface new questions that need addressing.
Track Changes and Manage Scope Creep Systematically
As you build, new ideas will emerge that weren't in your original scope—this is completely normal and happens in every project. When Claude encounters something missing from the spec, it won't add it on its own; instead, it logs it in a changes markdown file and surfaces it as a new proposed item on your Build Desk. This systematic approach to scope management ensures that every deviation from the original plan is documented, reviewed, and consciously approved by you, preventing the uncontrolled drift that often derails AI-assisted builds.
Conclusion
By following this three-stage approach—completing thorough discovery and scoping, using a Build Desk to track decisions, and restricting Claude's deployment permissions—you can harness the speed of AI while maintaining full control over your build. You now know how to set up the proper guardrails for your next Claude Code project so you can build confidently without losing track of changes or risking unwanted deployments.
